Are you taking too much Folic Acid?
It’s possible to have too much of a good thing… Our Naturopath Diane explains.
This is a reminder that just because something is natural, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always safe.
Folic Acid is a very important nutrient for women to take both prior to, and during, pregnancy.
There is also a theory currently under debate that folic acid lowers homocysteine blood levels – a good thing, as high levels contribute to heart disease and dementia!
But it is possible to have too much of a good thing. The supplement form of folic acid should not be taken at high doses for long periods of time due to its link to colon cancer, especially in those who are already considered to be at high risk of the disease.
Professional supervision when taking supplements or herbs, even if it’s just a once to twice yearly catch-up with your naturopathic practitioner, is advisable, as new research and updates will help keep you on a healthy track.
Di is available for consults on Wednesdays, Thursdays and every other Saturday at the clinic. Book your consult today!
